During my lifetime I have loved listening to Ella Fitz, Mel Torme Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Santana, the Folk Years, Traditional Irish music by Planxty, But my favourite has always been Gene McDaniels, I bought all his songs over the years, just think he had the most wonderful voice & he could sing in any style. I had not heard of him for many, many years & then found this site, but sadly a few weeks later he passed away.

  4. I am so sad about Gene McDaniel’s passing. He was a genius, and incredible composer who wrote
Killing Me Softly -Roberta Flack, and covered by Fugee’s Lauryn Hill.

My favorite song was “Meet Me On the Moon, sung by the late Phyllis Hyman, was truly
    a masterpiece.

Gene, I love you,, you will be truly missed.

As an 18 year old kid I sang “Chip Chip” on stage at my school concert in 1962. I am still singing and playing “Another Tear Falls” (badly) now. Until I spotted his name on the sheet music of my local jazz funk quintet I thought, in my ignorance he was just another 60′s pop star who had faded away. I had not heard “Sweet Forever” until this morning. His voice was as clear and melifluous as it ever was and the song is poignently beautiful. He still brings joy.

Gene McDaniels brings a smile to my face as I remember a very good friend, now deceased. She would hear a wonderful male singing voice and exclaim,” Oh, I always wanted to marry a man who can sing!” Well, dear friend, hope you run into Mr. McDaniels- HE SURE CAN SING!

  13. Alan Lindgren says:

I am so saddened by the passing of this American master. I am musical director for Neil Diamond. I had hoped one day to meet this wonderful and talented man who entranced me as young guy with “A Hundred Pounds Of Clay” and “Tower Of Strength”. Then to assist my musical journey with “Compared To What”. Today, I wept hearing his most recent songs.

    I will miss him.
